CONSERVATIONImpact to Ecosystem
There is a high level threat to the Tropical Andes. Identification of "key biodiversity areas" (KBAs) are being made to help conserve threatened species. Importance to People The Andean people know how crucial it is to conserve the Tropical Andes. A few conservation groups such as CEPF, WWF, and The Nature Conservancy, along with the U.S. Government have donated millions of dollars in efforts to help the Tropical Andes. |

HYDROELECTRIC POWERImpact on Ecosystem
The glaciers are melting in the Tropical Andes and hydroelectricity is purifying water so that is drinkable. Without hydroelectricity there is no water supply during the dry season. Importance to People Hydroelectricity ensures the people they will have available drinking water at all times during the year. |

WATER SHORTAGEImpact on Ecosystem
Due to the growing population, water shortage is an increasing problem in the Tropical Andes. Water is a necessity for all living things and if there is not enough for all the species, the ecosystem would be in danger of collapsing. Importance to People Humans need water to live and have a prospering society. Cities that are at lower elevations are at less risk than cities that are at high elevation. People living in this hotspot must take action to conserve the water. Scientists used nineteen climate models to estimate what will happen to Tropical Andes over the next sixty years - they predicted there will only be 10% of the current water supply left. |
